Edited by: Dark Shikari on 29/10/2006 14:22:05 The best anime to get into are probably the more mature, westernized anime. These rarely have many anime cliches at all (or in the case of Ghost in the Shell and Cowboy Bebop, basically none--no giant eyes, etc). Here's a decent list:
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (Cyberpunk scifi at its best) Cowboy Bebop (Like Firefly except better: cowboys in space) Last Exile (Awesome steampunk-like anime series with a great story, incredible animation, and just plain overall awesomeness) Appleseed (Anime-ish sci-fi film from the maker of Ghost in the Shell) Hellsing (Badass vampire-killing ownage) Fullmetal Alchemist (annoying main character, but overall good series) Neon Genesis Evangelion (People have split opinions on this one... but its worth watching, regardless of the emo main character) Serial Experiments Lain (will blow your MIND)
KickAssAnime is a great sub group for these if you want fansubs. I don't think they have Hellsing though.
For manga... I'm haven't had as much experience. The only manga I've read are Azumanga Daioh and Yotsuba&! (pronounced Yotsubato), so I really can't say much. But Azumanga is funny as hell... the manga is much, much better than the anime, primarily because converting a 4-panel comic into a TV series is a major challenge to any director

Well, Gundam SEED is pretty good.
If you ignore the horribly emo main character

Originally by: FFGR Nobody suggested One Piece ?! I find the anime/manga pretty good, but it's a love or hate situation for most people. Plus the bulk of episodes and that you have to get them for 2-3 groups since it is over 270 eps is well pretty annoying
Another great anime, even though it might be a bit heavy is Monster.
One Piece is like Naruto. It goes on, and on, and on, and on, and on, and on, and on, and on...

Ah yes, I forgot this one.
A very, very good series with very, very bad sequels.

altho .hack//liminality is not that bad, I have to agree with you.
Liminality isn't really a sequel--its just a 4-episode OVA to go along with the games. And no, it wasn't bad.
Its just that Dusk and Roots are so absolutely horrible by comparison to Sign that I refuse to consider them part of the same franchise tbh

Not that thats any different from most movies these days...
The 2004 Appleseed film is like a good James Bond. You know whats gonna happen, but its fun while it happens.

Hmm, right now i'm just wondering how many times you have to die.
While all 3 of the movies are awesome I do think the TV show (both seasons) were a bit overrated although some of the episodes were notably excellent.
Hmm, I would agree with Reiisha. The only justifiable claim that Ghost in the Shell isn't awesome is that the second movie was somewhat lacking in plot.
